The Rotary Club of Comber
The Rotary Club of Comber     - District 1160 - Ireland

Formed in 1986, the Comber club has around 25 members, all living locally. We carry out lots of local and international activities and projects, using funds raised from public and private sources. We meet on Monday evenings in Balloo House, Killinchy.

The club's main projects are aimed at helping young people develop their skills:

  • The NI Young Musician of the Year - a head-to-head competition to find the best of the province's young musical talent and raise funds for charity.
  • Youth Leadership - seeking out the top students from secondary schools and youth groups to take part in an all-Ireland trip to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.
  • Mock Interviews - giving senior pupils from two local high schools a lifelike experience of the pressures of a real job interview.
  • Grounds for Improvement - rewarding local schools who come up with the most creative environment projects to enhance their school grounds.
  • Comber Drugs Awareness Group (CODAG) - using two mobile classrooms and three specially trained educators to deliver health education programmes to primary schools in Ards, North Down and E Belfast.

The objective of Rotary is to foster the ideals of service, fellowship, goodwill and personal responsibility in the professions.

We also donate generously to local and province-wide charities such as NI Cancer Fund for Children and the NI Music Therapy Trust and usually respond favourably to a number of smaller requests. The Shoebox Appeal, Aquabox Emergency Aid, Jaipur Limb, Hope and Homes for Children and Polio Plus are international projects the club also supports.

But it's by no means all work. Members have fun too.

We invite speakers, exchange visits with other clubs, organise social evenings, film and theatre trips. We run summer outings and exchanges for members and families. And we try to keep ourselves fit with golf, bowling and other sports.

Why not think about joining us? You may have ideas for improving what we do; you could think up new projects or simply lend a helping hand while enjoying the fellowship.

Just tell us you're interested and we'll invite you to a meeting.
